Andrea Freckmann

Reality and the theatrical merge in Andrea Freckmann’s (1970) paintings. An interior featuring a sleeping woman for instance is transformed into a park with trees where three dogs are guarding her bedside. The images often originate directly from personal experiences. She thus places her own life on a stage where fantasy and reality meet. Sometimes the paintings are also accompanied by tangible, three-dimensional objects, such as a wooden diabolo or vase that are put in front of a painting as if they have fallen out of the image.

She often uses herself as a model for her paintings. Dressed up in historical costume she portrays herself in stereophotos that are also displayed in small viewing boxes. Consequently she uses these photos for her paintings. Recently she has picked up the theme of the puppet theatre as a metaphor for reality. Andrea Freckmann paints in a direct and bold brushstroke, with which she accurately depicts figures and objects. She has a preference for ornament and decoration which is displayed in the motives in the wallpaper and tableware or the lush plants that adorn her interiors.
