animation, video, drawings, work on paper
12 July – 3 August 2014
Internationally renowned sound artist Justin Bennett (1964) is particularly interested in urban structures. His recent video Dream Map Sao Paolo is an audio walk with a narrator using dreams of the city’s inhabitants for a guided tour that is supported by urban sounds like the buzz produced by the magnetic fields around electricity wires that hang above the streets.
In the exhibition Justin Bennett also shows the first phase of his project Blueprint, an animation of a growing and developing city map. The animation is based on cyanotypies, a procedure in which paper turns blue when exposed to sunlight. In the future the animation is meant to serve as a score for musicians who react to the changes in the map.
Pascale-Sophie Kaparis (1959) draws an organic variety of developing structures. In the Eye-series the veins in the eye, branching off further and further, are reproduced in red ink. In the gallery she will hang three large sheets of paper suspended form the ceiling, showing on one side a close up of the veign structure and on the other side the image of an eye. In the Mental Shapes-series the transformation of the visual information in the brain is visualized.
In these drawings the red lines are partially covered with Tipp Ex to produce a layered image. Ultimately, these drawings are also meant to serve as a score for an audio work. In spring 2015 a sequel to this exhibition will be shown at GEMAK in The Hague with musicians reacting to Bennett’s animation and an audio work based on Kaparis’s drawings. see: gemak.org/en
