By abstracting reality into a map, space is created for reflecting ideas and thoughts. Often Stan Klamer represents islands. The island forms a closed world, offering space for experiments and for the development of ideas because of its isolated position. In other drawings you see line systems reminiscent of the floor plan of an underground railway. In this way you are led from one point to the other along ever changing places and landscapes. Sometimes the journey is explicit and references are made to existing towns or historical and mythical persons as Ulyssses traveller of the ancient world.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text]The topographic map thus becomes a metaphor for reality in which the artist records and documents his own world. Over the past few years, water and ships have played an increasingly important role in his work. Last year, Stan Klamer extensively photographed the harbor and ships of Hong Kong with his smart phone. In the works resulting from this ships are floating in an ocean with blue, red and yellow blocks of color, each of them portrayed in the rectangular frame coming from the phone’s screen. Other drawings show a stream of minutely detailed objects that steadily pass before our eyes.<\/p>\n
