The long friendship with the Taiwanese/Canadian artist Ed Pien (1958) is important in this regard. Together they undertook several travels through Canada and its omnipresent nature.

They recently participated in the project SOIL in the Northwest Territory, Yukon, in which the care for the earth is a common thread. In the project scientists and artists collaborate in the study of soil, which can be seen as a living archive where the history of nature is preserved layer upon layer. Conversations with First Nations residents, walks through glacial regions, through partially blackened forests and along rugged creek banks have resulted in field notes, which are displayed in a vitrine case. In the exhibition old and new work spanning a period of approximately thirty years are combined. In the words of Karin van Dam: “By creating connections between the works, a new world has emerged between macro and micro systems and structures, between city and countryside, between verticality and the horizon”.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=””]She always conceived of the urban structure as an organically growing entity, with drawing as a starting point that she could expand into spatial installations. With the shift of focus to natural forms, she also began experimenting with wool and polyesters in the textile lab of the Textile Museum Tilburg. The exhibition features large circular shapes inspired by lichens, knitted with wool and plastic, and a tower constructed with a kind of steel wool hats, produced in Tilburg. By pairing together old and recent work a new coherence and meaning emerges revealing the wonder and vulnerability of the earth.

At the vernissage the new publication Terrestrial Belts will also be presented. At 15:30 hours author Lucette ter Borg will read a passage from the publication and enter a dialogue with Karin van Dam about the work and the exhibition. The gallery is open as of 15:00 hours. Terrestrial Belts is designed by Sybren Kuiper, published by Jap Sam books, and costs € 39,95. The publication was made possible by the kind support of the Mondriaan Fund and the Jaap Harten Fonds.

Karin van Dam’s installation Spinning Up, Spinning Down is still on show at the Textile Museum Tilburg till 31 May 2026 see: textielmuseum.nl[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row_content”][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”10x”]
