Ed Pien
De Taiwanees Canadese kunstenaar Ed Pien (1958) geeft in zijn werk uiting aan diepe menselijke angsten. In zijn werk duiken bizarre fantasie wezens op; demonen, geesten en spoken die hij met verfijnde elegante penseelstreken op het papier zet. Hiermee sluit hij aan op de traditie in de Westerse en Aziatische kunst van het uitbeelden van de hel.
In zijn werk komen invloeden uit de westerse en oosterse beelcultuur samen. Na zijn opleiding in Toronto maakte Ed Pien veel reizen naar Azie om zijn roots te herontdekken. Tijdens een reis door China pikte hij de techniek van het snijden in papier op. Hiermee ging hij complexe voorstellingen maken van bomen en bossen, waarin menselijke figuren verborgen zijn. Hij maakt ook ruimtelijk installaties met grote vellen betekend en uitgesneden papier, waar je als toeschouwer doorheen kunt lopen.
Uit de installaties komen ook performances en video’s voort. In Shadow Play zie je de schaduw van Ed Pien op een scherm. Hij beweegt zich door een installatie van uitgesneden papier en een netwerk van touwen, dat transformeert door een dynamische belichting.
Een variant van de uitgesneden tekening zijn de blurred cut outs. Hierbij print Ed Pien foto’s van takken en bomen op papier en snijdt die weer gedeeltelijk uit. Hierdoor komt zijn handschrift het fotografische beeld weer binnen. Zeer recent experimenteert hij ook met aluminium waarin de voorstelling met een sterke waterstraal wordt gesneden. In de aluminium werken speelt Ed Pien met de schaal waarop hij de mensen, natuur en bouwwerken weergeeft. De werken worden iets van de wand geplaatst zodat er schaduwwerking ontstaat.
