At Art Island 2026, Galerie Maurits van de Laar presents new textile works by Martin Fenne at stand 24. Martin Fenne works using a very labor-intensive technique with satin strips that are sewn together one by one.
His figures and objects are built up entirely from a color perspective, like old masters as Giotto or Piero della Francesca used color to bring volume and dynamism to their human figures. After earlier series of sleeping people on mattresses and discarded boxes and packaging, Martin Fenne now focuses on nature. Fungi and mushrooms in hallucinatory colors were followed by a series on the four elements, triggered by the floods in South Limburg, NL in 2021.
Most recently, he created a dried fig leaf and a pink conch shell, both larger than life built up from satin strips in subtle color nuances. These two most recent works are complemented by the works Water and Earth from the Four Elements series and a mushroom.
Art Island is held at the Fort Island in the North Sea Canal near IJmuiden; for more information about the fair and tickets: art-island.nl
