Christie van der Haak
In the 1980s Christie van der Haak (1950) established her name as an artist with paintings of madonnas, which she partly covered with ornamental shapes. The ornament has been a constant in her work ever since. Around 2003, Christie van der Haak gradually switched from painting to designing textile patterns. First she used fragments from her paintings and then started to design specific patterns that she applies in autonomous works of art as gobelins and carpets but also as furniture upholstering and wall coverings. The design consists of a drawing on paper in A4 format that is mirrored up and to the side in the computer and consequently filled in with color. By changing the colors yhe same motif can change from calm to strongly expressive in your experience.
Christie van der Haak has carried out various assignments in recent years. In 2007 she upholstered the furniture of the Grand Hôtel Amrâth in the former Scheepvaarthuis in Amsterdam. Her fabrics make a perfect match with the Amsterdam School style of the building. She also designed fabric for the Dutch Textile Museum Tilburg for a twenty-five-meter-long bench by Piet Hein Eek. Later she cooperated with him to cover his ‘Jufferbank’ (damsel bench). More recently, her fabrics were used in the reception hall of the head office of the ING Bank Leeuwarden.
Christie van de Haak exhibited in museums in the Netherlands and abroad. At the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag her fabrics were combined with white Delft porcelain in the exhibition Delfts Wit in 2013. Here she also conceived and built the spectacular installation Sproken/Fairy Tales on the occasion of her winning the Ouborg Prize, an oeuvre award for The Hague artists.
In 2015, the Wolfsonian Museum in Miami commissioned her as the first living artist to do a project, as a contemporary component to the exhibition Modern Dutch Design, devoted to Dutch Jugendstil, Art Nouveau and the Amsterdamse School. In the project entitled MORE IS MORE, the facade and entrance hall of the museum were covered with her patterns.
More recently she exhibited in the Textile Museum Tilburg, the Dutch Glass Museum, Stadsmuseum Woerden, Museum de Lakenhal Leiden and Schunck Heerlen. Currently she has a solo exhibition titled Empress Maria of Brabant‘ at Kasteel Helmond, The installation with wall and floorcoverings, furniture, glass and fabrics focuses on the life of medieval Maria of Brabant (1189 – 1260), who played an important role in the culture and politics of her age. She also participates in Chapter 3hree curated by Maarten Spruyt in the HEM Zaandam.
