Big Art #4
Dirk Zoete
three dimensional work
12 – 15 September 2019
At the fourth edition of Big Art Galerie Maurits van de Laar presents Giant by Dirk Zoete (1969). It is a giant human figure built from a steel frame and wooden plates, with a mask-like head crowned with a hat and a circle of candles. In Dirk Zoete’s work such composite human figures are common, they are distant cousins of the suprematistic figures of Kazimir Malevich and the ballet costumes of Oskar Schlemmer. In October – November Dirk Zoete will have a soloshow at Galerie Maurits van de Laar entitled So-called Human.
Big Art takes place this year at the Hembrug site in Zaanstad, once a military industrial complex that is now developing strongly as a cultural hotspot, due also to the recent opening of the new HEM cultural center housed in a huge former ammunition factory.
At Big Art you can see more than 70 oversized artworks by contemporary artists and designers. A mix of monumental paintings and drawings, sculptures, photos and installations by established and up-and-coming talents.
